The Tenchi Muyo Franchise

Tenchi Muyo is a very well known anime among the early Toonami generation of Americans. It is known for the sci fi and the women of the series. The Tenchi Muyo Franchise has three main timelines which can often confuse the new watchers. So here is a way to ease the confusion, a guide to the Tenchi Muyo Franchise.


The Timlines of Tenchi Muyo


Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki

The original OVA series from Tenchi Muyo. It lasted 20 episodes and was followed by Tenchi Muyo! GXP and Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar.


Tenchi Universe

This Tenchi Muyo! series is a remake of the first story arc of Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki. It lasted 26 episodes and is followed by the movies Tenchi Muyo in Love and Tenchi Forever.


Tenchi in Tokyo

This Tenchi Muyo! is set in a different timeline from the other two series.



Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki was the first OVA created by Masaki Kajishima. It was divided into three parts.



Masaki Kajishima has also writen several novels based after the franchise. The series includes Shin Tenchi Muyo! Yosho, Tenchi Muyo! GXP, Shin Tenchi Muyo! Washu, Shin Tenchi Muyo! Jurai, and the Paradise Wars.

Another writer, Naoko Hasegawa, wrote thirteen light novels based after Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki.


TV series


Tenchi Universe

AIC began the series in 1995 after the growth of demand for more Tenchi. It was created by Hiroshi Neishi and produced by Pioneer.


Tenchi in Tokyo

The series aired in 1997 and artisitic differences as well as concept differences could be seen.


Ai Tenchi Muyo!

This series in new to the Tenchi franchise. It is a commemoration for the 20th anniversary of Tenchi Muyo! and the city of Takahashi, Okayama is sponsoring it. The series will have fifty episodes each only five minutes long.

Created by Hiroshi Negishi, it continues the Tenchi Universe series.


The Daughter of Darkness

This movie is an adaption of Naoko Hasegawa’s novels.


Tenchi Forever! The Movie

This is a sequel to Tenchi Muyo in Love. The movie was also adapted into a manga called Tenchi Muyo! In Love 2: Eternal Memory.




No Need for Tenchi

A series written by Hitoshi Okudo and published by Kadokawa Shoten. It is based after the OVA original series.
