Danganronpa is an anime I meant to watch a long time ago, but just kind of forgot about it. I just recently remembered it when I was looking through different anime that are of the mystery genre. I am going to admit, this anime was pretty interesting, and it keeps you wanting to watch all of it without stopping.
The Plot of Danganronpa
Danganronpa is actually adapted from a game called “Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc.” The story centers on 15 high school students who are trapped in Hope’s Peak Academy, a school that accepts only students who are “elite” in their hobbies/fields of work. The school is controlled by a mastermind stuffed bear who is extremely dangerous, despite his body form. To be able to graduate and escape from Hope’s Peak Academy, the students must successfully murder one of their classmates. However, the murderer cannot be caught or found out by the other alive classmates, and the murderer can kill a maximum of two people. After a murder, the classmates search for evidence to try and figure out who is the murderer. If they are successful in choosing the murderer, then the students all get to live another day and the murderer is executed. If not, then the students themselves are executed while the murderer graduates.
The Characters of Danganronpa
As I mentioned before, there are 15 high school students in Danganronpa, which totals up to 16 characters including the mastermind. Each student has there own title within the school that describes what they are at the school for. The titles range from “Super Duper High School Luckster” to “Super Duper High School Martial Artist.” Due to the fact that there are so many characters, and most of them end up dead or executed, I will only cover the three main characters.
Monokuma is the mastermind stuffed animal in the anime. He is the principal of Hope’s Peak Academy. Not many of the students take him very seriously, so occasionally he has to do something in order to scare them into obeying him. He has murdered one of the students himself when they tried to defy him, showing that he is obviously not someone to be messed with. Makoto Naegi is the “Super Duper High School Luckster,” having only been accepted into Hope’s Peak Academy by a lottery. He is childhood friends with another one of the students there and many people have attempted to frame him during the murders. Kyouko Kirigiri is the “Super Duper High School ???” because she suffers from amnesia. She is Naegi’s partner throughout the anime and shares some secrets about the school with him. Whatever she can remember of her past, she shares with him as well.
After the students are given some time to investigate the murders, they are required to attend a meeting called “Classroom Trials.” During these trials, the students share the information they have found and attempt to come up with a conclusion as to who the culprit of the murder is. Interestingly enough, there are 16 places for students to stand, so during each trial there is always an empty place. Each student is allowed time to speak and eventually they all vote as to who they think the murderer is.
As I have mentioned, once you start watching Danganronpa, it’s hard to stop. I completed the 12 episodes in about 3 days, which is surprisingly quick for me. The ending was a bit disappointing and seemed a bit rushed, however, the rest of the story made up for it.
Overall Score: 8/10
