     Serial Experiments Lain

    シリアルエクスペリメンツレイン

     serial experiments lain

The anime series was directed by Ryutaro Nakamura. Yoshitoshi ABe did the original character designs while the screenplay was written by Chiaki J. Konaka.  From July of ’98 to September of ’98, the series ran on TV Tokyo. In November of ’98, Playstation released a video game by Pioneer LDC by the same name.

Influenced by philosophical reality, communication, and identity, the series main character, Lain Iwakura, becomes ‘wired.’ She introduced to the Wired, basically the Internet. Her family is a jumble of psychological messes with her cold mother, computer crazed father, and an inexpressive sister. She finds out that girls from her school have received messages from a dead school mate, Chisa Yomoda. She soon gets her own message from the Chisa. She explains that she is not dead but merely free d her body and in the virtual reality world. At this point, Lain is on a path that will go deep into the network as well as her own mind.
This anime series has been known for its philosophy, computer history, cyberpunk, and even conspiracy theories. Through these Lain has made its way into several academic articles. The producer Ueda had intended that the American and Japanese cultures would have conflicting ideas of the anime. This was not the case as even though the American viewers found it ‘weird,’ it still had positive reviews.

Why I chose this anime:This anime is a great psychological classic. An anime that is a gem that has been forgotten.

  • Anime of the Week: Ranma 1/2

    Ranma 1/2

    Ranma 1/2

    Main Characters: Ranma, Akane
    Run dates: April 15, 1989-September 16, 1989, October 20, 1989- September 25, 1992
    Episodes: 18, 143

Anime background: Ranma 1/2 had a run from April to September but was canceled due to low ratings. It was renewed in October and placed in a different time slot, which helped the anime last longer.

Plot: Ranma 1/2 is a comedy about a boy who falls in a cursed spring while training with his father, the spring’s curse causes him to change into a girl when splashed with cold water. Throughout the series, many of the other characters fall in springs with different curses, including Ranma’s father. The story follows Ranma, as he deals with his numerous fiancees, most of whom his father arranged, then forgot. Ranma, though annoyed by this, won’t admit who his true love is, which causes confusion and chaos.

Why I chose this anime: The anime itself is quite hilarious and the characters are interesting, albeit a bit shallow at times. I enjoyed the story and still find it quite unique. It was also quite amazing that not only did the anime return after being canceled, but that it did well and ran for a few years.

  • Anime of the Week: Macross Plus

    Macross Plus

    Macross Plus

Main characters: Isama, Guld Goa, Sharon Apple, Myung
    Release date: August 25 1994
    Episode count: 4

Background: In the official Macross/Robotech timeline, Plus is the first sequel to the original series. It is a four episode OVA series. The series was groundbreaking due to combining traditional cel and CG. It paved way for future Japanese animation and CG. Macross Plus also has new mecha designs that were inspired from the original series.

Plot: The plot takes place three decades after the war between humans and Zentradi. New technologies are developing by the UN government on Eden, a colony planet. Isamu Dyson and his former childhood friend, Guld Goa (a mix of human and Zentradi), are each given the ability to fly one of the new air crafts. This is to choose the pilot to the newest VF-21 Thunderbolt used by the UN Spacy military force. They are no longer friends though and this messes up the testing quite a bit. Myung Fang Lone also shows up and is a mutual female friend of the two. She just so happens to be the hottest entertainers producer, Sharon Apple.

    Macross Plus

Why I chose this: One of my favorite Macross series. I love the romance triangle between the main characters. Yoko Kanno does an amazing job with the soundtrack like always. The art work was the right 90s style for me as well.

  • Anime of the Month: Mekakucity Actors

    Mekakucity Actors

Mekakucity Actors is a 12 episode anime based off of the Vocaloid song series, Kagerou Project, produced by Jin (Shizen no Teki-P) that was released April 20th 2014 and ended June 28th 2014.

It revolves around a group of 8 kids who apart of a gang called the Mekakushi Dan (lit. “Blindfold Gang”) on the days of August 14th and 15th. Members of this Dan all have “eye powers” and events that occur on this day is what brings them together. They try to figure out the mysteries of their eye powers and try to bring out the truth.

For the most part, you follow around Shintaro Kisaragi (even though he’s missing for about 3 episodes), who is, basically the main character.

Shintaro Kisaragi is an 18 year old who has become a NEET two years prior to when the show takes place after the tragic death of one of his friends. After becoming a NEET, he doesn’t really have any friends besides Ene, an AI he accidentally downloaded shortly after becoming a shut in, and Momo, his younger sister of 2 years who is an Idol. Besides being a shut in, he doesn’t have any other friends because of his apathetic nature and can be very fidgety. He gains more friends after joining the Mekakushi Dan and realizing that the world was not as boring and cruel as he made it out to be. You don’t find out his eye ability until the villain reveals him self, which is Kenjirou Tateyama and Kuroha.

Now, in fact, the actual villain is not them themselves, but actually the “snake” that holds the eye ability that controls them that is the villain. The snake is dead set on making Kenjirou’s wish come true, which entails creating a monster with all the other snakes that walk the earth. This means that usually Mary Kozakura, who is the “queen” of all the snakes, resets time to save her friends over and over again, giving the evil snake what he wants.

Why did I chose this Mekakucity Actors?

    Mekakucity Actors

This is probably my most favorite anime of all time. Granted the plot line is a bit difficult to understand, but I’ve been hooked on this series ever since I heard the songs two years ago. When I found out that they were making an anime of it, I think I literally cried tears of joy.

The anime is fun to watch, even though it leaves you in the dust trying to figure out what happened. I’ve listened to the songs, read the manga, and have seen the anime more times than I can count, so I think I have what happens down pretty well. I think most people will enjoy this anime if they like action, supernatural, and tragedy themed animes. I definitely recommend it to anybody! (And I’ve actually forced my friends to watch and they’ve all said that they thoroughly enjoy it also).

  • Anime of the Week: Darkside Blues

    Darkside Blues

    Darkside Blues

    Main Characters: Darkside, Mai
    Release Date: October 8 1994

Plot: Darkside Blues was written by Hideyuki Kikuchi into two manga’s. It was later adapted by Yoshimichi Furukawa into an anime film. The anime is praised for the design and background track. It revolves around a town of Kabuki-cho. The resistance faction Messiah resides within the town. This is one of the last free places from Persona Century Corporation. The town is known as “The Darkside of Tokyo.” A man named Darkside resides there as well and has a mysterious aura about him.

    Darkside Blues

Why I chose this: Darkside Blues does not get enough recognition for the animated movie that it is. Confusing at first, it brings up some very good subjects. The character design and plot were great, but the background music is amazing.

    Berserk
Why Milly chose this: Berserk is a very well animated show and has a great soundtrack. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves older anime series. The plot may have been trimmed from the manga, but it is still worth the Watch.
