  • The Akashic Records

    The Akashic Records

There are many anime’s (and manga’s) that often go over the Akashic Records topic. The one that might come to your mind is Black Butler.

This article was written to explain what the Akashic Record actually is and what it does. I will also go over a few anime’s (and manga’s) it appears in and how it applies to that anime.

    A Little History

The word akasha comes from Sanskrit and was coined in the 19th century. The word akasha means space, sky, or luminous.

Akashic Records show up in theory with theosophy and anthroposophy. They are basically collections of thoughts and events that are encoded in a realm of existence that is not physical called the astral plane. There is no actual proof that the Akashic Records exist. H. P. Blavatsky summed up the records as being a life force of some kind. She goes on to explain that astral light records the past and future of the thoughts and actions of humans.

While describing this please note that she never used the term akashic. Alfred Percy Sinnet is recorded as attributing the term akashic record. It wasn’t until C. W. Leadbeater that the term became truly associated with the idea. He also stated that the akashic records was something a clairvoyant could read.

    Alice A. Bailey once said:

“The akashic record is like an immense photographic film, registering all the desires and earth experiences of our planet. Those who perceive it will see pictured thereon: The life experiences of every human being since time began, the reactions to experience of the entire animal kingdom, the aggregation of the thought-forms of a karmic nature(based on desire) of every human unit throughout time. Herein lies the great deception of the records. Only a trained occultist can distinguish between actual experience and those astral pictures created by imagination and keen desire.”

So what anime’s have the Akashic Records appeared in and to what degree?

The plot basically revolves around controlling the Akashic Records.

    Angel Sanctuary

The Akashic Records are known as Heaven’s Tablet in this series. The real records are on a supercomputer outside of time and God is an AI. Those who have a tablet can access the power of God.

    Black Butler

The Cinematic Record acts much like the Akashic Record would in recording the human life.

    Digimon Frontier

The Digimon, Ancient Wisemon, can rewrite the records by using an attack called Laplace’s Demon.

    Future Diary

The Akashic Records are their diaries in a way.

    The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service

The character Yata uses a goldfish puppet to talk with the dead.

    The Lucifer and Biscuit Hammer

Two characters have access or are seeking the Akashic Records.

    Nasuverse (Fate/Project)

The Akashic Records are mentioned heavily through out the Fate series. Magi’s work to gain access to these to able to use spells such as time travel. If all seven servants are sacrificed, the Holy Grail can open the gate to Akasha.

    Outlaw Star

The Galactic Leyline is the same as the Akashic Record.

    Oyasumi Punpun

The records are brought up a lot in this series by Pegasus and is what he uses to gain his precognitive powers.

    Psycho Busters

The characters are told to gain access to the records to reset the world before it ends.

The Claire Bible is the complete knowledge of the Water Dragon King, a god.

    Vampire Hunter D

There are some characters who can read them and others who can change them. D is able to do both.

    Yu-Gi-Oh! GX

The character Yubel has a spell called Akashic Record. Those who use this spell can draw two new cards, but if the card has already been drawn you lose both.

    Zombie Loan

There is an organization called the Akashic Record Reform Committee (ARRC) who are attempting to get a hold of the records for some reason.

  • Digimon Adventure Tri. Reunion (Anime) Review

Digimon Adventure Tri. Reunion Anime Review

As a huge Digimon fan I was extremely excited for this film and when I saw the promotional poster for this new movie I was hyped. And I watched it the day it was released, but at the time I was a bit biased towards the film because I of the nostalgia. So after waiting a while and rewatching it a couple of times, the questions now stand. Is this film any good and does it actually live up to the hype?

Please do keep in mind that I will be judging this movie not only as a start point for the  rest of the films but also as a standalone one.

Without further ado, let’s get started.

Plot of Digimon Adventure Tri. Reunion

I’m going to keep the synopsis short and brief so that I can get into the main part a little quicker.

Three years after the battle against BelialVamdemon,  Taichi and the others have begun to grow up and have started doing their own things and pursuing their own goals. However during his soccer game Taichi see’s that a Kuwagamon has appeared and attempts to stop it as it wreaks havoc and destruction across the city. By reuniting with his friends and fellow digimon the first film in the Digimon Adventures Tri series begins.

Digimon adventure tri, is honestly a difficult anime film for me to review because I really wanted this film to be good. Before I get into the nitty gritty stuff, I’m going to start with some of the positives.

Characters of Digimon Adventure Tri. Reunion

I think the writers did a fantastic job at realizing the stage in life that all of our characters are in. It feels believable and genuine. Even if you’re new to the series and know very little about these characters, the relationships all feel real. A major theme of this film is this idea of growing up and the distance that it creates between people who were once extremely close. It’s a mature theme that I really didn’t think would show up, but it did and it was executed brilliantly. The entire storyline involving these characters reunion was really the shining star of this whole film.
The character designs were also well done for the most part. It really feels like the characters that old Digimon fans knew and loved had gotten older.

Soundtrack and Pacing of Digimon Adventure Tri. Reunion

Now personally I thought they did a great job with the OST. Not only was the opening song enjoyable, but the music that played throughout the whole movie was done with great care as well. All the music fit well with the scenes and added a multitude of elements where it was needed. It was also fairly well paced. There were some moments where it could have slowed down and taken some time to explain some of the things that happened, but for the most part I was never left hanging.

Analysis of Digimon Adventure Tri. Reunion

Now despite being the first movie in a series, it doesn’t excuse it from not being to hold it’s own. This movie has a lot of flaws and sadly they aren’t little flaws that can be overlooked. As we move into the negatives I do want to say that the overall story of the film is fairly good despite some questionable characters and moments that make you go “wtf”. The major issues of this film really come from it’s directing, editing, and overall animation and art style.First off let’s start with the actual execution of the themes in this film. Without spoiling too much the first movie is really about Taichi as a character, and the setup for both his internal and external conflicts are done well, and although his external conflicts with his friends is strong throughout the film his internal conflict fails to feel natural and cohesive. This element of his character is forcibly shoved down our throats through obvious narration and dialog. It seems like the writers couldn’t think of any better ways to get this story arc across other than through generic and blatant explanation. So by the end of the film it wouldn’t be outlandish to say that Taichi was an annoying character to some extent.

I will say though that they were able to get this message across visually.

The next major problem with the film is it’s directing. There are certain scenes and set pieces during this film that really raises some questions as to how it was directed. Again without spoiling too much, there is a conflict that occurs at an airport, and during this battle scene, with destruction and chaos happening, it is literally put on hold to show the reunion of most of the characters and the digimon and we then spiral into a 2-4 minute scene where these characters have an actual conversation as if the battle is not happening at all. It’s like the writers decided that at this very moment the battle was going to go on intermission for a half-time show where instead of cheerleaders dancing to music and little mini games being played, we get to see a conversation play out.

Continuing on the films terrible directing there are even moments where the director had chosen to show single frame or scene multiple times to convey the exact same message which further makes it seem like there are elements just being forced down the audiences throat.

Moving past these issues we come down to the animation of the movie. First off I want to mention something. Is it just me or do the artists not know what Taichi’s skin color is supposed to be. Because in some scenes he has this fat tan but then in others he’s extremely pale. And don’t tell me it’s because of the lighting because in scenes that involve multiple characters in a dimly lit area everyone seems to retain their skin color just fine. Moving back on track the overall animation for me was disappointing.

There are moments where a characters face will look so out of whack that it pulls me outof the movie and makes me physically scrunch my eyebrows and question “what is wrong with their face”. Even if the animation style is supposed to be this simplistic, yet vibrant and cartoony, have some consistency in the quality of the characters that we see in every single scene. Despite the art style there are some scenes that just downright look like someone just smudged the screen and the only thing they didn’t mess up were the clouds. Because holy crap those clouds look good. There are some scenes where the anime really embraces their chosen art style well and it looks extremely good and works well with the movie but then there are scenes that just aren’t as well done. The animation quality just isn’t consistent. Many of you might think that I’m just over exaggerating nitpicks but these are all elements of the film that can pull someone out of the experience.

Guy’s, I really wanted to enjoy this movie, but I can’t wholeheartedly say that I had a good time watching it. Despite a fantastic and believable reintroduction to the characters and a setup for a fun story there are so many elements of this movie that really take you out of the experience. These seemingly harmless issues eventually spiraled out of control and made being able to really enjoy the movie from start to finish difficult. This film is really for the hardcore digimon fans who can look past all these glaring issues. But for others it might not be that great. After rewatching this film a total of three times, I can’t wholeheartedly recommend it. Therefore my final rating for Digimon
Adventures Tri: Reunion is; “Backlog it”.

It’s not something that you’ll ever have to watch, even if you are a digimon fan. I’d save it for a rainy day where you have nothing better to do. Hopefully the other movies were able to segway off this one well enough to make up for a very average return to the Digimon universe.

  • Genre Talk: Adventure

    The Adventure Anime Genre

    Popularity: 10/10

Commonly mixed with action, historical, or fantasy.

“A life with no adventure in it is boring. The least a friend can do is stir up a little trouble in your heart.”

    – Gai Tsutsugam (Guilty Crown)

When it comes to this genre, the story is drawn out and very detailed. Of course, as the name suggests, the characters are often in search of something. The story line tends to be strong as well as character development, mostly due to the fact they are long stories. The long story can sometimes be tedious to get through and often people will pause watching the series (or reading) and move to something else for a while.

Adventures are usually a genre in which the main character must risk their lives to reach the goal. The risks can be financial, psychological, or physical. Adventure anime’s can usually cause people to have motivation to get things done. This is because the character is often being given motivation to complete the task.

    Examples of Adventure

    One Piece

The most well known adventure anime out there. Luffy is on the search for the ultimate pirate treasure, One Piece. With a crew, each member gained as a separate adventure, they sailed through the Grand Line. A series that focuses on its character and plot development.

    Digimon Adventure

A group of kids are drawn to the Digital World to search for a way to save both that world and reality. They face many perils along the way as well as other small adventures.

    Samurai Champloo

A pairing of three random people in search for a samurai that smells of sunflowers.

  • The DigiDestined Crests

    Crests of the DigiDestined

The Crest not only represents what symbol their trait is but as well as their physical manifestations of a small tablet that slides into the Tags that are worn around their necks. When the person exhibits their crest trait, it begins to glow and evolves their Digimon. Once the Tags are destroyed by Apocalymon, they use the Crest to focus their power that lies within them. Each Crest has a special power that protects the owner.

    The Nine Crests

    Crest of Courage

Taichi Kamiya (or Tai), is the embodiment of the Crest of Courage. This is the first Crest to be found. This Crest is used to digivolve Agumon and his many Digi-evolutions. The Crest is corrupted at one point and this causes Greymon to Digivolve into a dark SkullGreymon.

    Crest of Friendship

Yamato Ishida (or Matt) is the embodiment of the Crest of Friendship. It was the fourth Crest to be found along with another one. This Crest is used to digivolve Gabumon and his many other Digi-evolutions. It can be used to warp digivolve into MetalGarurumon.

    The Crest of Love

Sora Takenouchi is the embodiment of the Crest of Love. It was the seventh Crest found and in Datamon’s possession. The Crest is used to digivolve Biyomon and the many other Digi-evolutions.

    Crest of Sincerity

Mimi Tachikawa is the embodiment of the Crest of Sincerity. It was the third Crest found along the journey in the flower of a cactus. It is used to digivolve Palmon into the other Digi-evolutions.

    Crest of Knowledge

Koushiro Izumi (or Izzy) is the embodiment of the Crest of Knowledge. It is the fourth crest found along with another. It is used to digivolve Tentomon into various other Digi-evolutions. It can be used to digivolve Kabuterimon into MegaKabuterimon.

    Crest of Reliability

Joe Kido is the embodiment of the Crest of Reliability. It is the second Crest to be found by the group in cage (which happens to be a trap). It is used to digivolve Gomamon into various other Digi-evolutions.

    Crest of Hope

Takeru Takaishi (or T.K.) is the embodiment of the Crest of Hope. It is the sixth Crest to be found by the group on a cliff wall. It is used to digivolve Patamon into his various other Digi-evolutions. It can be used to digivolve Angemon into MagnaAngemon.

    Crest of Light

Kari Kamiya is the embodiment of the Crest of Light. It is the eighth Crest to be found and the DigiDestined do not know of its existence at the time due to there only being seven of them. It is used to digivolve Gatomon into her other various Digi-evolutions.

    Crest of Kindness

Ken Ichijouji is the embodiment of the Crest of Kindness. It is the ninth Crest to be found and in the second season of Digimon Adventures. It was once corrupted into being used as an energy source. It is never used to actually digivolve Wormmon at all, mostly since the Tag was never found.

  • Character of the Week: Kari and Gatomon

    Kari and Gatomon

Kari is a main character from the Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02. She is paired with a Digimon named Gatomon and is part of the DigiDestined. She has the Crest of Light trait. Her actual Japanese name, Hikari Yagami, is translated to ‘light of the eight gods.’ This could be a reference to her number of the DigiDestined in season one.

Kari was not part of the group at first due to the fact she was sick and could not go on the camping trip. She is a very kind child and grows into a kind adult as well. She is often paired with T.K. since they are the same age. Their Digimons are also paired together quite often.

Gatomon is paired with Kari as a DigiDestined. Gatomon is from the Digimon Adventure, Digimon Adventure 02, and Digimon Xros Wars (manga) all with Kari as the partner. Gatomon looks similar to a cat. Gatomon also has a pair of yellow and orange gloves with black claws. These were copied from the Digimon SaberLeomon. Her name comes from the Spanish word for cat, gato. She is also known as Tailmon.

  • Digimon vs. Pokemon: The Otaku Debate

    Digimon vs. Pokemon: Anime Debate

Note: This is only an anime Digimon vs. Pokemon. It is clear that even most Digimon fans will say the Pokemon Video Games are better. I placed the names in alphabetical order.

The debate of Digimon versus Pokemon has been going on for a few years now (15 years now!). I will try to be as unbiased as possible, but for the record I am on the Digimon side. To begin with I will go over the history of both anime’s along with a general plot and then give both sides opinion.

    Digimon History & Plot

Tamagotchi’s was the original Digimon. In the beginning they were made to be cute, but soon over time, they became more ‘monster’ like. In March of 1999, Digimon Adventure was released into theaters. It was an animated version of these cute monsters. At first it was only meant to be a short movie, but soon so many requests were given to make it into an animated series for children. The same, the animated series Digimon Adventure began to air in Japan. Digimon spawned five more separate series, each with at least one movie, card games, video games, manga’s, and so much more since the release of the original series. The series is produced by Toei Animation as well as Bandai of Japan.
The series basic plot revolves around Digital Monsters. These creatures inhabit the DigiWorld which is a manifestation of the Earth Network. Each series tells about a group made up of pre-teens and their Digimon partner. They must defend the DigiWorld and the real world from evil. These children carry Digivices which help their Digimon partner to ‘evolve’. Each Digimon can Digivolve into a much stronger Digimon, but can ‘de-evolve’ when needed.

    Pokemon History & Plot

Pokemon is a franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1996. It was original a pair of video games released for the GamBoy, Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue. The animated series came out in 1997 as a children’s anime. Including the entire series, Pokemon is split up into five sequences according to the video games. This makes the entire series (so far) 17 seasons long with also many movies, shorts, side stories, and a few spin offs. Since the original release of the video games, Pokemon has spawned an anime series, manga’s, more video games, card games, and many more things.
The entire series focuses on one boy and his adventure to catch all Pokemon. Ash Ketchum starts as a ten year kid who overslept on the day to receive his Pokemon. Due to this he gets Pikachu. Along the way, Ash meets a few people which decide to travel with him as well as catch Pokemon. Along with several enemies (Pokemon and human), Team Rocket also lurks in the shadows attempting to catch Pikachu.

    Digimon Side

There are many points why people argue that Digimon is the better show. To save time I will only go over five points; Evolutions, ability to speak, better devices, more indepth story, and better villains.

    Agumon Digivolve
The evolution of a Digimon, or Digivolution, is possibly the most used argument for Digimon lovers. Digimons can evolve in two ways, through gaining enough data or through a Digivice used by a Tamer. This evolution, however, is not a permanent thing. If they lose to much power, suffer a great injury, or just done with the battle they can ‘devolve’ back into a lower form to conserve energy. If the Digimon is injured bad enough or ‘killed’ a Digiegg will appear and the process will start over again. They also have the ability to Digivolve into several different stages, some having up to six Digivolutions. It may be a set path of an evolution or it can be a chosen path, depending on the Digimon. Unlike Digimon, when a Pokemon evolves it is permanent. Pokemons evolution is normally set (except a few ie. Eevee) and it depends on level, a stone, trading, or through a reaction of the environment.
Another focal point for Digimon fans is the fact that they can speak. Unlike Pokemon, who say only variations of their names, Digimon can speak. Dialogue is very important to most stories. The character can develop more easily this way. You can often tell if a character is developing by their speach pattern at times. They can have a somewhat ‘baby’ talk but soon comprehend more indepth words. Relationships can also be more easily formed not only with other characters, but with the audience as well. They become more human like and therefore you can connect with them better.

    Digimon Crests
The Digivices and Crests are another great argument. They are simply much cooler to use than a Pokedex. While the Pokedex contains all the Pokemon and the information, the Digivice can be used to evolve the Digimon. They help the human character and Digimon to create a connection like no other. They are also specific to each team (ie. Tai had the Courage Crest).
The tone for Digimon is way more serious than Pokemon. Some of the characters actually die (like some major ones) as well the fact the story was more indepth. The series has a good balance between story and episodic episodes. This is good because the story does no have to be wrapped up and can leave the viewer wanting to watch the next episode. Pokemon wraps up with happy endings and light hearted stories. Digimon has light hearted moments, but only to compensate for the darker ones. In Digimon, characters actually died and were hurt pretty badly. No one was immune to life as Pokemon were immune.

The last point for Digimon are the villains. The villains in Digimon were a lot more ruthless than Pokemon. It is hard to compare Team Rocket to Myotismon. While Jessie and James only played tricks to get Pikachu, Myotismon actually tried to kill the Digidestined and enslaved the Digi World. The villains of Digimon were a lot harder to defeat and the Digidestined had to actually evolve their fighting skills to defeat them. They even tried to fight a few times to early and clearly lost, but were spared.

    Pokemon Side

While there are many good points to the Digimon side, Pokemon has a lot of advantages as well. The main points for Pokemon I will go over are Gym Badges, Pokemon Collections, Episodic Episodes, and Consistency.

    Pokemon Gym Badges
The Gym Badges are an argument that I do not often see being used. Gym Badges can be obtained by any person who defeats the gym leader. In this sense, the Digivices fall short. They are only handed out to select few, mostly Digidestined. They may not be as vital to the users as the Digivices are, but the fact they are more obtainable is quite nice. Gym Badges are actually earned when the person is able to defeat the leader, showing more skill development.

    Pikachu Pokemon
Collecting Pokemon is the main reason for the series. Unlike Digimon, you are allowed to own more than one Pokemon. If you wanted Agumon and had patamon, you could not switch. In Pokemon if you have an Eevee and wanted a Pikachu, you just have to trade or go find one. Here Pokemon has the clear advantage. You can own any Pokemon you can catch.

    Ash Ketchum Pokemon
Ash is the main character of the series and seems to remain the same age throughout the show. Pokemons plot development is little to none, but this can be a good thing. Watching Ash go along his journey may seem tedious and at times boring, it shows every step of his development. I mean every step. It is as if you are there with him along the whole journey. For children this can be an exciting thing. Their imagination runs much better than adults and can connect to the show quicker. the show is developing, just at a slow pace.
Pokemon remains very consistent through out. Each season revolves around Ash and his journey while Digimon seasons have new characters each time. Pokemon may have the same main character, they add new things with each arc. They try to keep in new with the old stuff. They know what they are doing is working, so why mess with success. Digimon tries to evolve with each child generation and fit in with new over dramatic monsters while Pokemon keeps their same cuteness.

    My Opinion

I am a Digimon fan to the core. I love the first few seasons of Pokemon, but the same thing got tiring. In all honesty I have only watched the first two seasons of Digimon and refuse to watch any after that. I love the characters! The story and villians of Digimon are way better and that is what I look for in an anime. Others may look for cute pets and a story you can watch at anytime, but I need action and blood. I like that Digimon can speak and the connection needed from Digidestined and Digimon.

    Which one are you?
