    Potara Earrings

    ポタラ

Potara are earrings worn by Supreme Kais and attendants of them. They have been worn for many generations now. They are not just used for jewelry though. They hold a second usage that is very powerful. They may be the standard outfit for any Supreme Kai you see. They come in many different colors, so they do not look like anything special. They have no power when worn by one person as a set.

The power is only seen when two people are wearing only one earring on opposite ears. They do not even have to be from the same set. At that point, the two beings are fused together without any warning. This fusion is a permanent. The only way to get out of this fusion is if that person is sucked into a world that does not support the fusion. This is seen when Vegito is absorbed by Super Buu.

Another bad things about this fusion is the inability to power down if you fuse while you are powered up. Going Super Saiyan to fuse can be a great thing, but it would eventually wear down the body and shorten the life. There are good things though as well. When two people merge, their powers are much much stronger than before.

When merging together in a Potara fusion, not only are the two people merged but their clothing as well. The dominant person will show through the voice and facial features. This is shown with Supreme Kai and Kibito. Vegito may have had a double voice and an even look of Veget and Goku since they are both very dominant.

    Potara Merges

In the Dragon Ball Z series, there are three known Potara merges.

The first was the old witch and old Kai.

The second was Supreme Kai and Kibito.

The third was Goku and Vegeta.

    Dragon Ball Manga Review

     IMG_0071

Recently I finished the manga Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball’s manga encompasses the entire Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z anime series. Of course I found that there are many fillers in the anime versus the manga, but the anime rarely leaves anything out from the manga. This makes the anime very faithful to the manga which is sometimes hard to find. The manga was created by Akira Toriyama and ran from 1984 to 1995.

Note: I will be using the American names while reviewing this manga. There are major and minor SPOILERS

    Dragon Ball Plot

    IMG_0360

I am sure everyone knows the plot of the series, but I will go over it anyways.  The first 194 chapters follows a young boy named Goku. He meets up with a young girl named Bulma which only wants the glass ball that Goku’s grandfather (Gohan) left him. What he does not know is that there are six more of these dragon balls and when gathered they grant any one wish you desire. So they begin to search for them. A lot happens throughout these chapters and alot of characters are introduced.

The last half of the manga ( chapters 195-519) follows Goku as an adult. Now he has a child and several of his friends. The story no longer focuses on the journey of finding the dragon balls but instead on Goku and his fellow friends saving the Earth multiple times.
I have a lot of problems with the last part of the manga. The first part actually focuses on a set journey and destination (not that the last part does not). It seems to be more focused on the story and the fun of writing/drawing the manga. The characters all play an important part and Goku seems to grow as a person as well. The last part, however, seems rushed and just attempting to get a story out there for the fans. Goku does not grow as a person at all. The other characters play a part, but nothing really special.

    Dragon Ball Characters

    Dragon-Ball-Manga-B-W-dragon-ball-35271834-500-670

There are a lot of characters throughout the series. Some show only a few times, while others appear often. Due to this I only want to go over a select few characters. Basically the ones that play a big part.

    IMG_0208

Goku being the main character should grow. Like I said, in the first part he does grow as a character. He is a young child so it would be weird if he did not develop as he grew older. He is naive and a happy person. What you would see in any shonen manga. He eats a lot, laughs at serious moments, and always saves someone at the last minute. As the manga goes on and you begin to get the Dragon Ball Z arc of the manga, his development stops. He seems to be the same person and just becomes annoying. *SPOILER* At the end of the manga he comes to fight at the Tenka’ichi Budōkai. He really only shows up to find Boo’s reincarnation (Uub) and take off with him, leaving his family alone AGAIN *SPOILER END* That was another thing that annoyed me about Goku. He seems to really only care about himself and fighting. Even at this point Vegeta would rather stay with his family, that is just sad.

    IMG_0204

Which brings me to my next point, Vegeta. Vegeta is one of my favorite characters. He grows as a character (enormously) and becomes a great constant rival for Goku. I really have no problems with his character. He seems to be more ruthless in the manga than in the anime more towards the Saiyan and Namek arcs. *MAJOR SPOILER* I though that his true colors showed when he committed suicide trying to kill Boo. It really showed how his character developed from wanting to destroy the Earth to saving it *END SPOILER* He has one goal in mind, to get stronger than Goku.

    IMG_0032

Of course, Dragon Ball would never have the story without Bulma. Bulma is the person who prompted Goku to find the Dragon Balls and is a driving force throughout the series. She is a genius and filthy rich due to her parents and the creation of capsules (which her father created). She is just like any other teenage girl, hates the outdoors, wants to be pampered, and is looking for the perfect guy. Even her character grows more than Goku’s. She starts as a snobby girl that wants her way and runs from any danger. Towards the end she calms down alot and even goes to the fighting sites of many of their enemies.

    131-Oxtnc

I wanted to talk about the children of Goku at once. Gohan is not that big of a disappointment in the manga… well except for Great Saiyaman. That was a fail for me. Gohan does not seem to be that whiny in the manga. Goten on the other hand was a little annoying. I could see the importance of his character, but he was nothing serious to me.

Trunks is a different story. Future Trunks is another favorite character of mine. He was similar to the Cell arc Gohan and therefore I liked him a lot. He is compassionate, but knows when he must fight. He is basically the same in the anime. The actual timeline Trunks was even just as good. In the anime he annoyed me a little, well a lot. I am not sure why though. In the manga he was not so annoying.

    IMG_0131

Krillin, Master Roshi, Yamcha, Tien, and Piccolo all play an important part as side characters. Krillin is just as annoying as he is in the anime and dies just as often. He never catches a break. Master Roshi is extremely perverted. Yamcha surprised me even more in the manga than in the anime. He really trains hard and tries to catch up even though he can not. But hey, at least he tries and that is more than some people can say. Tien shows up a lot in the first part of the manga, but he seems to take a back seat in the last part, especially the Boo arc (which he is shown like one time). Piccolo grows as a character basically along the same lines as Vegeta. They both just develop way more than the first character.

    IMG_0216

The other characters throughout the series all play important parts, but like I said there are so many to go over. Even the villains are hard to go over, so I want to just sum them up together. Basically all the villains have one goal, World or Universal dominance. They are all ‘really strong’ until Goku comes out of left field and throws a wrench in their plans. Many times it is not even intentional like the Red Ribbon Army. The villains in the first part are more of a joke than those in the second part. The Dragon Ball villains consist of humans and then eventually Piccolo. The last part of the manga has villains that are from other planets so they are more serious in their conquest.

    Dragon Ball Artwork

    IMG_0110

Akira Toriyama was pretty consistent with his artwork throughout the series. The first part is a little more sloppy in some ares, but it is still very well drawn out. The paneling selection works out for this manga as well. Mostly the manga is filled with action scenes due to the genre type. In most mangas I read that have many fight scenes, the artwork begins to get sloppy and you start to jumble things up. It gets annoying, but Toriyama seems to keep his clean and this helps with the enjoying the manga a lot more. He seems to like to draw out the characters and takes time in their wardrobes. A good example is Bulma. He hair changes often as well as her outfits, making her character more believable as a  typical girl.

    Dragon Ball Overall

    IMG_0117

Overall I did enjoy the Dragon Ball manga. I did get a little bored when I began the DBZ arc, but that is only because I have watched almost all of the anime. Like I mentioned earlier, the anime follows the manga panel to scene almost (except when fillers come along). Even though I enjoyed the manga, I would recommend people to read the Dragon Ball arc, but actually watch the Dragon Ball Z arc. You will get more enjoyment out of it that way.
There are many things this manga can teach you, mainly perseverance. There were many times that everyone was sure to die or fail, but they kept pushing to get to the end. It may have been a fun journey at first, but it becomes more life threatening towards the end.

    Overall Grade: 7/10

    About

    Saiyan Race

Naturally aggressive, Saiyans are a warrior race which are almost destroyed by Frieza. The name of the race is actually an anagram of Yasai, Japans word for vegetable, and Yajin, Japans word for wild man. Most Saiyans in the series are named after vegetables as a pun. They live in rocky homes on Planet Plant. This is not their home world which is rumored to be destroyed, but possibly still out there as well. They renamed Planet Plant to Planet Vegeta after their leader King Vegeta.

    Military Force

    Saiyan Race

The Saiyan race has an extremely powerful army. Age 737, that army came under the control of Nappa. He is said to be the most powerful general of the army. Frieza used the Saiyan army to conquer a lot of planets when they were employed under the Planet Trade Organization. There are several ranks in the army based mostly on the Saiyan’s power level. Only two ranks are ever mentioned: Elites and Low-Class.Toriyama did confirm that there is another rank called Mid-Class in an interview. The Low-Class rank makes up most of the Saiyan army while there are only about ten Mid-Class rank spaces. King Vegeta and Prince Vegeta are teh only two Saiyan Warriors classified under Elite rank. Saiyan’s can be promoted within the army, granted their power level rises. Frieza destroyed what is known as teh last of the Saiyan race with the exception of Prince Vegeta, Nappa, and Raditz. Of course, secretly Goku is a survivor as well.

    History

    Saiyan Race

The Saiyan race has always been a very violent. They are constantly getting into fights with other races and taking over. The legend of the first Super Saiyan is the oldest tale told by the Saiyan race. A thousand years before the Namek Saga, a Saiyan held the Super Saiyan form only while in the Big Ape Transformation. He gave into his primitive self and destroyed everything in sight. He destroyed himself in the end.
In the Age of 550, Saiyans had found a planet worth calling home, Planet Plant. They shared this planet with the Tuffles. While the Saiyan’s stayed in the wasteland areas, the Tuffles were better fitted for city life. The Saiyans may have become jealous and eventually attacked the Tuffes, vowing to take their city and destroy their race. This war lasted ten years. King Vegeta was the commanding hero who brought the Tuffles down. The planet was renamed to Planet Vegeta.

After the war with the Tuffles, the Saiyans were approached by the Arcosian race. They came to them to hire them to take over a suitable planet for them. In exchange they gave them money and the taught them how to use the Tuffles technology. Over the years the Saiyan race became smarter, but still held onto their destructive lust.

The Planet Vegeta came into Frieza’s control about a year after the war with the Tuffles. They became part of Frieza’s military. Since they were an extremely powerful and destructive race, Frieza used them as mercenaries and important missions. Frieza became concerned with their ability to become powerful quickly. Even worse, he feared the legendary Super Saiyan. This eventually led to the Saiyans destruction in the Age of 737. The three known survivors were lied to and told an asteroid took out Planet Vegeta. Goku finally avenged the Saiyan race by defeating Frieza on Planet Namek. Future Trunks eventually finished Frieza off not too long after on Planet Earth.

Other known survivors are Turles, Paragus, Broly, Tarble, and Onio.

    Physiology and Tail

    Saiyan Race

Saiyans are very similar to humans in outward appearance. They do have a larger build, both male and female, and of course their signature monkey tail. Their hair are mostly black with the few exceptions of brown, blonde, and blue. The Pure-Bloods hair stays the same from the day they are born according to Vegeta. They can, however, cut their hair as Nappa and Vegeata are shown doing. Facial hair can grow on a Saiyan.
Their tails are very sensitive. They are usually the brownish style of a monkey. They can train their tail to be less sensitive. If they do not, the tail can cause great pain and even immobilize them if grabbed or harmed. They can also use the tail to grab things. Most Saiyan warriors keep their tail wrapped around them. If they do not do this, they can lose balance if the tail is cut off.
Their tail is very unique to the Saiyan race. It gives them ability to transform into the Great Ape. This only occurs when exposed to the full moon’s Blutz Waves. The only way to stop them is either wait it out or cut the tail off. Their tail can grow back unless it is surgically removed like Goku’s and Gohan’s. It is said that if the Saiyan is in danger, their tail will grow back quicker.

    Personality Type

    Saiyan Race

Saiyan’s share a common personality. They would rather be fighting and creating chaos than have peace. Goku has a strong taste for fighting himself even after having amnesia. He uses it as a sport rather than an instinct though. Other Saiyans are extremely hot-headed, aggressive, and even hard-headed. Sometimes they just battle for fun with each other. They make rash decisions due to the fact they let their emotions get in the way. They are egotistical as well. Other than the royal blood line, romance and marriage are not really a thing for the Saiyans. Their are a select few who actually care such as Bardock, Goku’s father.

    Strength

    Saiyan Race

They are naturally a strong race, especially since fighting is in their blood. An average Saiyan has a power level from 400 to 660. They can have a power level from 1,200 to 18,000 though. They can lift more than ten times their own weight with no problem. Planet Vegeta is a high gravity planet and therefore they develop their strength quicker. They can level up quickly by tough training sessions. Their body compensates if theyare close to death and recover by becoming even stronger. They can heal at a faster rate than humans as well.
They can manipulate ki energy very easily. They use it to fly and create attacks that are energy based. They can also lend energy to fellow fighters when needed. They can regain their lost energy in a short time.

    Speed

    Saiyan Race

They also have great agility and speed. Their reflexes are faster than most humans so much so that they can avoid a bullet with no problem. They are extremely quick and can not be seen by an average human. Since they are so fast, most of their battles are hand-to-hand combat.

    Appetite

    Saiyan Race

The average Saiyan has a huge appetite. They can eat between 30 to 40 meals a day on average. Since they use so much strength and power, it is easy to see why they have such a huge appetite. It is often shown in the anime, Goku eats plate after plate without feeding his hunger. Their appetite can be a bad thing though. If they go too long without eating, it weakness them enormously.

    Lifespan and Growth

    Saiyan Race

Saiyans live on average 70 to 90 years. Their peak, however, is much longer than humans. They remain in their prime much longer since they are built for fighting. Their physique keeps them young. This is greatly seen in Dragon Ball GT when Pan, 1/4 Saiyan, is 100 years old and is still strong as ever with only a few grey hairs. Their lifespan is longer than humans, but since they are an aggressive race they die younger. Goku is a great example of their growth rate. He looks considerably younger that Chi Chi in Dragon Ball GT (before he was turned into a child).

    Hybrids

    Saiyan Race

Humans and Saiyans can interbreed as shown originally with Gohan. Since all the remaining Saiyans are mostly males, this is useful in continuing the race. Their offspring usually possess the same abilities as a Saiyan only sometimes weaker. They lack instinct for combat and the drive for it as well. As far as we know, Gohan is the only hybrid shown with a tail. The others could have been removed at birth though. Those that are born without a tail, like Pan, cannot transform. This is called into question with Goku Jr and Vegeta Jr being able to transform into a Super Saiyan.

The hybrids have their special abilities though. The three to transform into Super Saiyan did it at younger ages than Goku and Vegeta. The latter two treated it as a child’s play thing though. Gohan surpassed Goku by reaching Super Saiyan 2 first as well. If they do not use their power continuously, they can lose it.

    Transformations

    Great Ape

    Saiyan Race

With the help of their tail, the Saiyans can transform into a giant ape like creature. They possess a strong lust of destruction. They have tremendous power and size as well. This all occurs when looking at a full moon. Of course they have to have their tail attached as well. They have limited control in this state and can only be stopped by daylight or cutting the tail off.

    Saiyan Race

A Golden Great Ape appears in Dragon Ball GT. It is a far powerful state and they appear to be golden. Goku, Vegeta, and Baby Vegeta are the only Saiyans to achieve this form.

    Super Saiyan

    Saiyan Race

The Super Saiyan is a very powerful state. Their speed, energy, and strength all increase when they transform. There are several different Super Saiyan stages, each stronger than the last. The stages have different appearances as well, mostly in hair. A female Super Saiyan has never been seen.
